University of Iowa College of Public Health Environmental Design

Creating successful environmental design, especially in large spaces is a unique challenge. It represents an intersection of design disciplines from print layout design to an understanding of interior design. It also represents what it means to be an effective communicator in not just the work itself, but also in the various parties involved from the building’s owners, to the client asking for the work, to the printers, installers, and more. It’s design not just by committee, but by multiple committees.

Despite the challenge, The University of Iowa College of Public Health approached me for a freelance project to develop large-scale environmental design pieces to bring some Iowa pride to their student-facing spaces. Relying on pattern, texture, and large type I worked with the client over multiple months to thread the needle of the original intent of the work, the realities of the brand, and the spaces they were to be installed in.
